OK....what is a fermata?

It's a "bird's eye" notation in music; it means to hold the note until the conductor cuts you off, you feel like it, or for approximately twice the written value if you're playing Bach.

And if you play horn and you have a 2-measure solo at the beginning of a piece, a fermata means hold the note until you pass out, because your band director enjoys seeing just how long it will take...

Or if it's Beethoven's Fifth and you have a solo entrance AFTER the fermata it varies, just so the conductor can catch you off guard every time...

[frustrating rehearsal tonight...]
